APIE Advanced Camp #04 Brings Emerging Internet Engineers Together at the SOI Asia Haneda Campus

From June 12–17, 2026, SOI Asia welcomed 24 participants from seven economies to the Haneda Campus in Tokyo for the APIE Advanced Camp #04 – Service Deployment.

Designed as the final onsite component of the APIE learning pathway, the camp challenged participants to apply the knowledge they had developed throughout previous APIE courses by designing and developing an online service from concept to proof of concept.

This year’s camp introduced several new activities. Before the official program began, participants visited Interop Tokyo 2026 and explored ShowNet under the guidance of Takashi Tomine (ARENA-PAC, WIDE), gaining firsthand exposure to the operation of a large-scale Internet network.

Throughout the week, participants attended lectures and hands-on sessions covering service deployment, virtualization, cloud infrastructure, monitoring, databases, scalability, and security. The curriculum was co-designed with the Advanced IT Architect Development Association (AITAC), with Yuji Sekiya and Seiichi Yamamoto joining the APIE team throughout the camp as lecturers and mentors.

Another new activity invited participants to revisit the fundamentals of the Internet using the Internet Hands-on Kit, inspired by the Internet Hands-on Model exhibited until January 2025 at Miraikan (The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation) in Tokyo and introduced in the Understanding the Internet course. Working in groups, participants designed short presentations to explain how the Internet works to non-technical audiences, reinforcing both their technical understanding and communication skills.

The camp concluded with the Meet the Internet Engineers event, bringing together approximately 60 participants, including APIE alumni, representatives from industry, international organizations, and academia. The event offered participants an opportunity to better understand Japan’s Internet landscape while expanding their professional networks within the Internet community.

Participants will continue working on their group projects before presenting the results during the online Final Presentation scheduled for July 15.
