1. Introduction

The University of San Carlos (USC) is a leading academic institution in Philippines. It was also here that the oldest school in the country emerged - the University of San Carlos (USC). Founded by the Spanish Jesuits on August 1, 1595, USC was formerly known as the Colegio de San Ildefonso . In 1769, it was closed upon the expulsion of the Jesuits from the Philippines. It reopened in 1783 along Martires Street on the initiative of Bishop Mateo Joaquin de Arevalo under the name Colegio-Seminario de San Carlos , named after St. Charles Borromeo, the great patron of ecclesiastical training in the Renaissance. In 1867, the Vincentians took over the administration of San Carlos.
In 1930, the Colegio de San Carlos (CSC) was transferred to the new P. del Rosario building, while the Seminario de San Carlos remained in Martires Street. Five years after, the Colegio was turned over to the Society of the Divine Word (SVD - Societas Verbi Divini ), which managed the school for 70 years now.

Crossing the threshold of the 21st century, the University of San Carlos (USC) continues to train future leaders as it did in the past by providing them with holistic quality education in an environment conducive to learning.
With an evangelizing zeal, the University also undertakes research aimed at producing and disseminating knowledge that is not only new but is relevant to the current needs of its immediate milieu, in particular, and the world, in general.
Various scholarships, research grants, and exchange programs for faculty facilitated through linkage with local and foreign academic institutions, foundations, and other sponsors, enrich USC's teaching capability. The University has also been recipient of foreign-funded development programs that not only enhanced its facilities but also affirmed its prestige as a catalyst for change in the Philippines.
Foreign students, lecturers, and researchers come annually to USC for short and extended visits, adding to the multicultural character of the Carolinian community.

Main Compus

Today, USC offers a broad spectrum of academic programs through its eight colleges. It consists of four campuses located in the different areas of metropolitan Cebu - the Main Campus, the Talamban Campus, the North Campus, and the South Campus.

2. Network situation

 

USC plays a very important Role in the Philippines Internet Connectivity. Currently, USC is connected through PLDT (Phil. Long Distance Tel. Co.) 2Mbps and PREGINET (USC-ComEng Dept.)1 Mbps .

 

 

3. Classroom environment

In USC, we reserve a room all through the year to be used as SOI Asia lecturer studio. We put a rack to accomodate network and audio/video equipments. This studio works for both receiving lecture and classroom for realtime class.We use the following applications to receive the lectures :

  • VIC/RAT
  • RPT
  • Windows Media Stream
  • Kvirc
  • BBS

Trained operators are supporting to operate this environment.
